The Education, Training and Employment Unit is based at Poole Probation Centre, but aims to offer routes into ETE for all offenders with an identified need, regardless of location within the county.

The ETE Team work with supervised offenders to assist them with overcoming barriers to employment, including:
  • Poor literacy and/or numeracy skills
  • Issues relating to disclosure and/or the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
  • Vocational training need
  • Job skills need, including interview techniques and CV building
  • Confidence and motivation issues
  • Diversity issues, including gender, language, learning disability and rurality

The ETE Officers (PSO Grade 3) work with all offenders, including high risk and special status offenders (for example, sex offenders, prolific and priority offenders). Consequently, ETE Officers must be experienced in relation to risk management and assessment, including child protection issues.

The Matrix Standard PDF Print E-mail
The Matrix Standard is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers information, advice and/or guidance (IAG) on learning and work.

Within Dorset Probation Trust (DPT), the matrix standard is applied to the delivery of IAG services to all offenders on the DPA caseload who require additional support to access Education, Training or Employment.

The application of the matrix standard is assessed based on achieving excellent end-results that anyone working in or visiting the organisation will consistently hear, see and experience.

Dorset Probation Trust was originally accredited by the matrix standard in 2005, and has subsequently been successfully reaccredited in 2008.

What is Cafe 63?

Dorset Probation Trust's Cafe 63 is situated at Poole Probation Centre, the main Dorset Probation premises for the delivery of interventions, including Offending Behaviour Programmes and Education & Training.

The Café provides hot & healthy meals for offenders and employees using or working in the Centre, while at the same time offering a learning environment within which offenders can gain valuable work experience in a busy catering environment and one or more catering qualifications.

Allotments Project PDF Print E-mail
marcetroadDorset Probation Trust, in partnership with Dorset County Council, are responsible for an allotment in the Weymouth area, which is maintained and worked by offenders under our supervision.

Offenders working on the allotment will gain valuable work experience and horticultural skills which will significantly increase their employability.

In addition, offenders on the allotment are given the opportunity to gain a horticultural qualification.

Support and guidance is provided by volunteers from Weymouth Community Volunteers.

Dorset Probation Trust recognises that one of the main barriers to employment which is faced by ex-offenders, is a lack of understanding of their obligation to disclose offences to a prospective employer.

To support ex-offenders in making appropriate decisions regarding Disclosure, when seeking employment, Dorset Probation Trust offers an in depth Disclosure interview to all offenders currently under the supervision of the Probation Trust.

Dorset Probation Trust recognises that it is often difficult to engage an individual with education, particularly if that person has been unemployed for a long period of time, is struggling with a specific learning need or has been away from learning since school.

Further, a high percentage of both male and female offenders have low literacy and/or numeracy skills, while many were excluded from school.

NOMS ESF Phase 2 (new futures)

Between January 2012 and December 2014, we will be working as part of the National Offender Management (NOMS) European Social Funded national programme to address barriers to learning and work experienced by offenders and ex-offenders.

The project will be delivered in partnership with all Probation Trusts and Tribal Group Ltd throughout the south west. Our transition year began in January 2011 and our full programme launched in January 2012.

The new futures website will be updated as our work develops.
