Welcome to the Dorset Probation Area Website the purpose of which is to provide information about the work of the Dorset Probation Area within the wider Criminal Justice System.
As part of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) which is comprised of Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS) and the National Probation Service (NPS), the Dorset Probation Area is one of 42 Probation Areas nationally whose overriding purpose and goals are:
· To Protect the Public
And
· To Reduce Re-offending
The Dorset Probation Area covers the whole county of Dorset including both Bournemouth and Poole.
As a member of the Local Criminal Justice Board (LCJB) for Dorset, comprising Dorset Police; Her Majesty’s Court Service (HMCS); Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS); the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Youth Offending Teams (YOT’s), the Dorset Probation Area seeks to contribute to the delivery of criminal justice services which ‘Build safe and tolerant communities and which give the public confidence in the Criminal Justice System’
In this context, the Vision of the Dorset Probation Area is:
‘To provide the best possible service for people in Dorset, the victims of crime and the offenders whom we manage’
Our Mission is:
‘To work with local partners to protect the public and to reduce crime and its impact on victims by changing offenders’ behaviour, thus contributing to public reassurance and to making people in Dorset safer’
The Strategic Priorities of the Dorset Probation Area are:
a) Protection of the public through the effective and safe management of those offenders who represent a risk of serious harm and, wherever possible, their effective rehabilitation;
b) Contribution to the reduction of re-offending in the South West Region and in the Dorset Probation Area through the delivery of the performance targets agreed with the Regional Offender Manager (ROM);
c) Maximising the quality and effectiveness of the services provided either directly or through the commissioning of other providers to deliver such services where this represents better value for money;
d) Maximising the opportunities for working effectively in partnership with a range of other organisations through the development of strategic alliances with other Probation Areas; HM Prison Service, other statutory partners through the Local Criminal Justice Board (LCJB), Local Strategic Partnerships (LSP’s), Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) et al and with both the Voluntary Community and Private Sectors;
e) Maximising the opportunities for community engagement through our active involvement in the development and delivery of Local Area Agreements (LAA’s), partnership working with a range of local community organisations, the commissioning of local community providers to deliver services where appropriate, the use of community based volunteers to support our work with offenders and the delivery of services which best meet the needs of the local community;
f) Enabling Dorset Probation Area to make the successful transition from Board to Trust status by April 2011. | |

SKILLS & EMPLOYMENT PRACTICE GUIDE
"Reducing re-offending, preventing victims and making communities safer are key priorities for the Government. Equipping offenders with the right skills to access and succeed in the workplace is an important part of that strategy. The benefits are well known and the case material included in the guide gives a flavour of what success means in the context of individual lives."
Rt Hon David Hanson MP , Minister of State, Ministry of Justice
